The requirements

Six points that matter.

You care for someone close to you. For us to employ you for their basic care, these requirements need to be met. We employ family caregivers in the cantons of Zurich, Aargau, Schwyz and St. Gallen.

  1. At least 18 years old

You receive an employment contract with Spitex Medimex. For this you need to be at least 18 years old. Already retired? We are happy to look at your situation with you in person.

  2. You care for someone close to you

You care for a member of your family, your partner or someone from your close circle. Important: you already support this person regularly and reliably today – not only once you are employed.

  3. A stable, long-term care situation

Your relative regularly needs help with basic care, such as washing, dressing or eating, and is likely to need it for some time to come. A stable situation is easier to plan and support.

  4. No conflicts with employment law

The employment must not conflict with your other work – for example if your employment contract rules out a second job. If you are unsure, we will clarify it together.

  5. Willing to take part in quality measures

You record the care you give every day. Your nurse calls you at least every 2 weeks, visits you at least once a month and reassesses the needs at least every 6 months. In the cantons of Zurich and Aargau, a care assistant course within the first 12 months is added – Spitex Medimex pays for it up front and covers half of the cost; your share is deducted from your wage in agreed monthly amounts. In the other cantons, we discuss with you whether a course makes sense for you – the same cost split applies.

  6. Everyone involved agrees

The person you care for agrees to being cared for by you and to the needs assessment – as do all others involved, for example a legal representative.

Go through these six questions for yourself:

  1. Are you at least 18 years old? You are employed by Spitex Medimex, with an employment contract.
  2. Do you already regularly support someone close to you? A member of your family, your partner or someone from your close circle – regularly and reliably.
  3. Is this person likely to need help with basic care for some time to come? For example with washing, dressing or eating. The situation is stable enough to be planned.
  4. Can the employment be combined with your other work? If you have another job, your employment contract must not rule out a second one.
  5. Are you willing to take part in the quality measures? Daily records, regular calls and visits from your nurse and – in the cantons of Zurich and Aargau – a care assistant course.
  6. Do the person you care for and everyone involved agree? The person you care for would like you to care for them – and any legal representative agrees as well.

If you can answer yes to every question and the person you care for lives in the canton of Zurich, Aargau, Schwyz or St. Gallen, you meet the basic requirements. If you are unsure about a question or the answer is no, we are happy to look at your situation together.

Question 1 of 6

Are you at least 18 years old?

You are employed by Spitex Medimex, with an employment contract.

Family and close circle

Who counts as a relative?

Relatives are family members, spouses and partners, and people from the close circle. What matters is not whether you are related, but that you were already supporting the person regularly and reliably before being employed, and that you take responsibility for them.

  • FamilyDaughters and sons, brothers and sisters, grandchildren and other relatives.
  • PartnershipWife or husband, partner – including in a registered partnership.
  • Close circlePeople who are not related but belong to the close circle and take on responsibility.

What spouses or family members owe each other anyway cannot be billed. The needs assessment shows which basic care is paid for: it sets the time an outside carer would need.

Good to know

What you do not need.

Many people hesitate because they think they would have to be a nurse. You do not – we show you what to do and support you.

  • No nursing diploma

For basic care, a good introduction from your nurse is enough. In the cantons of Zurich and Aargau, you take a recognised care assistant course within the first 12 months. In the other cantons, we discuss with you whether a course makes sense for you. We support you along the way.

  • No doctor’s order

Basic care does not need a doctor’s order. We send the result of the needs assessment to your family doctor for information.

  • No need to give up your job

The employment can be combined with an existing job – provided your employment contract allows a second one.

  • No billing with the health insurer

We take care of that. How many hours are paid for is set by a qualified nurse in the needs assessment at your home – using the interRAI HC Schweiz tool.
